CUBBON MAGIC REPELS VIKINGS

Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield holders Southern Nomads regained some of their past form as they edged out a resilient Western Vikings team 22-3 at King Williams College. Nomads were undoubtedly favourites to take the game but the dogged defence put up by Vikings showed that on their day, they are capable of causing an upset. Only for some clever play from Nomads’ number eight Jimmy Cubbon, Vikings could easily have sprung a surprise.
The first clear cut scoring chance fell to Vikings on the quarter of an hour mark when George Gadsby linked with Joe Whitelegg in midfield to create space for wing Paul Middleton. Middleton was hauled down thirty metres short but Nomads handled at the ruck and gave Gadsby a shot at goal which just drifted wide.
Five minutes later, Nomads finally broke the deadlock with a stunning solo try from bulky winger James Hammal. He got some clean ball with enough space to stretch his legs and stretch them he did. His combination of pace and power cut through some sloppy tackling for a well finished try and a 5-0 lead which Nomads kept until half time.
Gadsby reduced the deficit early in the second half with a penalty after a shower of yellow cards saw Nomads reduced to twelve men. Soon to be married Neal Kelly went first for some trademark handling on the ground and he was quickly followed by Andy Lean for some over enthusiastic rucking and Jimmy Cubbon for dissent. Vikings were unable to capitalise though and a missed Gadsby penalty was all they had to show for their efforts during the power play.
With just over five minutes to go Vikings lost Aaron Curphey to the bin and Jimmy Cubbon grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. He slotted a penalty to extend Nomads lead to 8-3 and then made two try scoring penalty moves. The first came deep in his own half when he quickly tapped a penalty and surged through the Vikings line before offloading to Neal Kelly who galloped home under the posts. The second was an up and under (or possibly a sliced touchfinder if he was honest). Vikings failed to clear their lines and when Tom Davies recovered the ball he was able to send Cubbon clear to wrap the game up.
